A wizard should take great care in choosing what he would study; there is darkness stronger and older than he -- even he -- in Middle-earth, and it is wise to tread softly. He should have had greater care of Saruman, Gandalf thought later, but whether Saruman ever reproached himself in secret, it cannot be said: perhaps it would have destroyed him, to acknowledge that somewhere in the darkness his feet had gone astray.

"Your elbow is in my face, Elf," said Gimli, half-asleep and growling. Legolas removed it, laughing; he was breathless, he was afraid.

"There are times when even the grace of the Elves may fail," he said. He was glad when he found Gimli was asleep, and had not heard the break in his voice.
